The Terra Cotta Army is said to be the largest archaelogical find of the last century.
In 1974 some farmer was digging a well near Xian, China and found parts of a broken sculptured soldier. Since then over
6,000 soldiers along with a large number of chariots and horses have been unearthed. They surround the
tomb of emperor Qin Shi Huang who reigned from 246 B.C. to 210 B.C. Through force, he united much of China under
his rule. Even though parts of the Great Wall had been started since 900 B.C., large sections of it
got completed under his rule. He was a tyrrant and was apparently afraid he needed all the protection he could get in
the afterlife, so he had this "army" buried with him. We toured 3 huge buildings that have
been built over and around the ruins. It was fascinating.

As you can see, the excavation continues. |
